Cookie
A text file given to a web browser by a web server. The text file is then stored by the browser on your computer and is called cookie.txt. Each time the browser requests a page from the server, this file is sent back. A cookie's main objective is to identify users and personalise their visit by customising web pages for them for example by welcoming them by name next time they visit the same site. A site using cookies will usually invite you to provide personal information such as your name, e-mail address and interests.
IP (Internet Protocol)
All networks connected to the Internet use a protocol called IP, the technical standard which allows data to be transmitted between two devices. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is responsible for making sure messages get from one host to another and that the messages are understood.
IP address
If you are connected to the Internet you have one, for example it may look something like this 198.184.98.9
Web Server
Delivers (serves up) web pages to your computer.
Use of Cookies on this site
Data Protection Act Requirements on Cookies and Personal Information
saferharlow.info is fully conformant with the provisions of the Data Protection Act. The Web Server application delivering the site pages to visitors does not use cookies directly.
The application uses 'session variables'. Session information is maintained on the server but only the session ID is sent to the client. This session ID contains no cookie type personal information that infringes either the letter or the spirit of the Data Protection Act. However, as this session ID performs a similar function to cookies in a much more secure way, cookies have to be enabled on the Client's machine.
When saferharlow.info delivers web pages to visitors it does not use cookies which store any personal information or information which could be linked to people on visitor's computers. The "session variables" use cookies which exist on visitor's computer only while the visitor is connected to the site and stores only the session ID - it never uses any data about the visitor and the session ID is erased immediately on disconnect.
The application can use the cookies mechanism and give visitors corresponding privacy warning if required. But if critical, it can switch off all cookies as required by the provisions of the Data Protection Act."
