Crucial Crew 2010 - teaching children how to stay safe
25 March 2010
Year 6 students from across Harlow have been learning about how they can stay safe as they grow up and become more independent.
From 15-26 March 2010 every year 6 student in Harlow will take part in the annual Crucial Crew event at the Latton Bush Centre; organised by the Safer Harlow Partnership (SHP) and supported by Harlow Council.
Now in its ninth year Crucial Crew is an interactive scenario-based event that aims to equip children with a broad knowledge of personal safety issues, that they are likely to face once they move up to senior school.
Children participate in a number of interactive scenarios that require them to make decisions about issues relating to alcohol, drugs, stranger danger, road safety, bullying and personal safety. During the sessions they also take part in simulations to help them learn about fire and electrical safety. Drama students from Harlow College's performing arts department participate in the scenarios and assist Police Community Support Officers to marshal the event.
Crucial Crew sessions are set in a safe, controlled environment, where children have access to expert advice and guidance to help them understand anything they have experienced as part of the event.
Each student is given a Crucial Crew work book, packed full of useful information, to take away with them. Parents and carers are encouraged to complete fun activities in the work book, so the whole family has an opportunity to learn about keeping children safe. Teachers can also use the work book in the classroom and will be able to log on to a dedicated website to enable continued learning beyond the Crucial Crew event.
Now a regular favourite with Harlow primary schools, Crucial Crew is proving to be a fun, popular event with children and teachers around the town.
