Community Involvement

Crime and disorder affects everyone in the community. The Police and other agencies listed in this website are working together to make Harlow a safer place in which to live, work, shop, and visit.

This is not, however, the whole story. Tackling crime and disorder isn’t just the responsibility of the public bodies. It is everyone’s responsibility. Without that often quoted term “community spirit,” residents can lose their sense of identity and ownership of the areas in which they live, leading to a downward spiral of vandalism, disorder and crime, with no one prepared to take a stand against it. This is increasingly recognised by Government and is also being addressed by the Council, for example through the formation of its new Community Engagement Team, which will be working to facilitate community led solutions to local problems.

Information such as community groups, residents associations, ethnic minority groups, and the Youth Council will be provided so that you can find out what is going on in your locality.

This section of the Safer Harlow website also reflects the preventative side of crime and disorder reduction. We aim as the site develops to provide a directory of local clubs, groups and leisure activities which adults, parents, youths or children may find of interest when looking for things do.

If you are interested in forming a residents association or would like to know more about community involvement and the benefits of being part of an active community group or project, please contact the Council’s Community Engagement Team on 01279 446655
